Mel Bochners erste Ausstellung 1966 in der Galerie der School of Visual Arts in New York wird heute als erste Konzeptkunstausstellung überhaupt bewertet, er gilt als Pionier der Konzeptkunst. Dessen Vertreter hinterfragten radikal die Vorrangstellung der Malerei, so auch Bochner, der mit Farbe, Kopien, einfachen Materialien und vor allem Sprache experimentiert.
